Independence must not equal freedom from accountability. The aim of this review should
be to establish a framework that ensures monetary policy is conducted in accord with
other economic policy and in a way that is accountable to our democratic institutions.
This will best ensure that “the monetary and banking policy of the Bank is directed to the
greatest advantage of the people of Australia”.
