The black economy affects the whole community; it is not just an issue for government. It provides unfair competition for honest businesses. It leads to the exploitation of more vulnerable workers. It increases the costs of providing government services because of people who don't pay their share of tax. This issue needs a long term response from the whole of government, business and the broader community.

A public discussion about the black economy is important to fully examine this issue. The Chair, Mr Michael Andrew AO, and Taskforce are working closely with business, community and government representatives, including state and territory governments.

To date over 130 consultations have been held with representatives from business and industry, community, academic and government sectors.

In May and June, the Chair consulted widely with the community as part of a national roadshow, visiting regional and capital cities. The Taskforce would like to thank attendees for participating and for providing views and valuable feedback about the black economy.

In August a consultation paper outlining a number of additional policy ideas based on public and stakeholder consultations, was released. The 54 ideas outlined in the Taskforce’s paper were not recommendations, but intended for public comment and reaction.  The paper can be found below.

The public have been invited to provide submissions since January 2017. Submissions to the Black Economy Taskforce have now closed. The Chair appreciates the feedback and it will be used to help inform a final report.

Mr Andrew will provide his recommendations and final report to Government in October 2017.
