The Census and Statistics Regulations 2026 remake the Census and Statistics Regulation 2016, which will sunset on 1 October 2026.
The 2026 Regulations are made under the Census and Statistics Act 1905. They commence on 1 October 2026 to support the ongoing operation of the Act.
The 2026 Regulations largely replicate the 2016 Regulation. Minor drafting changes align the instrument with current legislative drafting practices and do not change underlying policy intent or operational effect.
A transitional provision in section 17 supports a smooth transition from the 2016 Regulation to the 2026 Regulations.
Overall, the 2026 Regulations update and maintain existing regulatory arrangements and ensures continuity and ongoing alignment with established policy settings.
