Give feedback on issues for the design of the News Bargaining Incentive.

It encourages digital platforms to make or renew commercial deals with news publishers.

The consultation paper explores:

  • definitions on thresholds

  • rate of the charge

  • details of the deduction mechanism

  • implementation considerations

  • regulatory costs

  • interaction with government assistance, codes and tax laws.

Background

Public interest journalism is more reliant on digital platforms. Lower access can lead to social, economic and democratic harms.

The incentive reinforces the News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code.

It will address the bargaining power imbalance between digital platforms and news businesses. This keeps the Australian news and journalism sector strong, diverse and sustainable.

Next steps

Your feedback will shape legislation for the incentive. We will then consult on the draft legislation.
